Smart StartThe following services are made possible by our funding partner, Wake County SmartStart, an organization dedicated to ensuring children are prepared for success in school and life.

preschool classThe Hispanic Family Center has early intervention programs for children ages 0-5. Language is a Key, Parenting Presentations, and Readiness to Kindergarten are three key programs to help children succeed in school, with the help and support of their parents. All instruction is given in Spanish.

Language is the Key

The goal of this program is to encourage the language and reading skills of preschool-aged children. To achieve this, a group of parents meets weekly to learn effective strategies for language development. Then, parents have the tools to help their children on the path to being a successful reader. These weekly sessions follow the Dialogic Reading Model, which includes exchanging age-appropriate books and teaching parents a method of reading and playing with their children that develops their child’s verbal and reading skills in preparation for kindergarten. Parents do not need to be experts in reading to motivate their children to read and develop creative thought and speech.

Language is a Key is based on three premises:

  1. Strong language skills are critical to later academic success.
  2. Parents, after participating in the program, can use simple skills to help their children’s language and reading.
  3. Having a solid base in the child’s native language will help him/her to learn and develop English.

Requirements: Must live in Wake County and be able to attend all 10 sessions

We offer a preschool for children (3 & 4 years old) of ESL (English as a Second Language) students. While their parents are learning English, children can also learn their colors, numbers, letters, and more. The schedule is the same as the ESL class: Monday through Thursday, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Parents must be attending the English class for their children to enter the preschool program and both children and parents must attend classes four days per week. Space is limited.

Developmental Screenings for preschool-aged children

As part of our early intervention program, we offer developmental screenings to children ages 0-5. We use the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) method to screen children for possible learning, speech, or developmental delays. Many children show signs of a developmental delay at an early age, yet the delay remains undetected causing the child to enter school without having received the assistance they need. When these delays are detected, an early intervention plan can be established for the child to ensure that he/she is prepared to enter school and continue learning. Through the screening, we can help ensure that parents are well informed about their child’s development and are aware of all the options they have to help their child learn.

Please call the Hispanic Family Center at (919) 873-0094 Ext 223 to learn more about screenings and to make an appointment. This service is free.
